What is an Anxiety Disorder?
40 million adults in the US suffer from an anxiety disorder. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorders in the United States. Anxiety disorders manifest themselves in various forms from general anxiety to more precise conditions such as specific phobias and/or panic disorder.
The exact cause of anxiety is unknown. However, expert research suggests that anxiety disorders develop due to compounding elements including environmental and genetic factors. Elements, such as differences in brain chemistry and function, genetics, differences in the way threats are perceived, and personality development may place individuals at increased risk for developing an anxiety disorder.
It is important to note that anxiety does not occur in a vacuum. Anxiety is often is accompanied by substance abuse, depression or other mental health conditions.
