But, this blog isn’t about those numbers they have had their time to shine, we just wanted to get your attention. So let us shift your focus to 988 the mental health crisis line that went live July 16, 2022.
988 Suicide & Crisis LIFELINE
In 2020, Suicide was the twelfth leading cause of death in the United States. According to SAMHSA that is 1 death by suicide every 11 minutes, which is why suicide hotlines exist.
The 988 Suicide & Crisis LIFELINE, formally know as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides free and confidential emotional support to individuals that are in suicidal or emotional crisis. 988 still connects to the original 1-800-273- (TALK), which has been aiding in the battle against suicide since 2005.
How 988 Works
988 can be dialed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Dialing 988 works much like the ever familiar 911.
Your call will initially be answered by an automated voice message informing you that you’ve reached the 988 Suicide & Crisis line
The automated message will be followed by brief hold music while your call is being connected to a LIFELINE crisis center closest to your area
Your call will be answered by an empathetic and supportive crisis counselor. Their role is to listen to your concerns. Listening provides insight into the problem and how the issue is affecting you. During the call they will provide you with resources that may be helpful.
When should I call 988?
If you are contemplating self harm or are in emotional crisis call 988 to seek emergent help. You may also call 988 if you are concerned that a friend or loved one is at risk for self harm.
If you or a loved one are currently experiencing a mental health crisis or thoughts of suicide it is imperative that you treat it as the emergency that it is and call 988, in the case of imminent danger call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
